Deploying Master Pages
When you create new SharePoint 2010 master pages, you need to factor in how to deploy those master pages. For instance, when you create new master pages in SharePoint Designer, one of the options is to deploy the master page directly to the current site collection’s Master Page Gallery. This option is suitable in a small environment in which you might only have one or two site collections. However, where you need to manage master page—along with other customization attributes such as CSS and page layouts—deployment to an entire farm then you need to consider a more robust solution, such as using Features to automate the deployment process.
