Many different configurations are possible in a SharePoint 2003 implementation. Multiple Windows SharePoint Services servers can be implemented as independent servers in a large enterprise, SharePoint Portal Server 2003 can be configured on one system or distributed among a server farm, and databases can be located on one or more servers. The organization may choose to not implement a portal at all and stick with Windows SharePoint Services to begin with, or to create several portals for better manageability.
