Much of the confusion surrounding SharePoint Technologies arises from the differences in the two products, SharePoint Portal Server (SPS) 2003 and Windows SharePoint Services (WSS). In general, there is a great deal of overlap between the capabilities of these two products, although there are still differences between the two that affect administration.
