The means for accessing system information has changed very little from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2012. The system views that were introduced in SQL Server 2005 are still the preferred means for getting at that all-important system information. These views, which include catalog, compatibility, and dynamic views, are discussed in detail later in this chapter.
