Chapter 11. Creating Packages and Transferring Data

Packages allow you to control not only the transfer of data in and out of the SQL Server 2005 server (commonly referred to as extraction, transformation, and loading, or ETL for short), but also to automate a variety of maintenance and administrative functions. This can all be done through a graphical development environment that provides debugging and troubleshooting support.

The types of tasks you are likely to want to automate include the following:

  • Transfer data
  • Maintain databases
  • Run commands
