Reporting Services Architecture

To deliver the functionality required by a reporting platform, Reporting Services uses a variety of components, extensions, and application programming interfaces (APIs) in a multi-tier architecture with data, application, and server tiers. For most reporting scenarios, implementation of the standard architecture suffices, but the modular nature of the architecture allows you flexibility when you plan to use only some features or when you need to distribute components across multiple servers for scalability.
