After completing this chapter, you will be able to

Maintenance is a vital task that should be included as part of any database administrator’s (DBA’s) daily workload. Database maintenance includes rebuilding indexes, updating statistics, monitoring performance and security, checking database consistency, and performing database backups. Each task should be done at regular intervals, with the intervals based on the requirements and needs of the organization. Backups are discussed in detail throughout this chapter, while the other tasks are explained later in the book.
