What Is a File/Filegroup Backup?
If you have limited time in which to perform a database backup and you cannot perform the backup using a full database backup, differential backup, or transaction log backup, SQL Server 2000 offers the option of performing a File/Filegroup backup. Files or filegroups can be backed up individually or together. Restoring a complete database from a File/Filegroup backup is a little trickier than a regular SQL Server backup/restore. Tables or indexes that span multiple filegroups need to have the files and filegroups with spanning objects backed up together.
