Scaling Out

Scaling out generally involves the addition of extra SQL Servers to provide increased scalability. When a SQL Server 2005 instance for a particular database solution is at its maximum potential and unable to meet performance demands, you should consider scaling out. SQL Server 2005 allows you to scale out both the database storage solution and the hardware solution. Chapter 19, covered how you can use data partitioning to scale out your database solution. In this chapter, I will examine the following technologies for potentially scaling out your SQL Server solution:

  • SQL Server instances

  • Clustering

  • Database mirroring

  • Log shipping

  • Replication

  • Shared scalable databases
