Windows Character Set Translations
The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) character set and ANSI (American National Standards Institute) character set are both derivatives of the ASCII character set. The ASCII (American Standards Committee for Information Interchange) character set is a seven-bit character set that predates microcomputers. The ANSI enhancements include foreign language and mathematical symbols. The OEM character set also adds line-drawing characters that allow character-mode windows to be easily drawn in character-mode MS-DOS programs.
