Administering a CA

A lot of tasks are required from a CA administrator. With the tools available, most of them are easy to perform. Some of the more common tasks are

  • Information gathering

  • General server administration

  • Certificate administration

  • Backup and restoration

There are two basic ways to administer a certificate authority. The primary way is through the MMC console, which allows you to operate and maintain your CA from any part of your Windows network. The MMC interface allows you to operate certificate authorities that are not on the machine you are working on. The other way is through the command line. Each option has its own set of benefits and detractions, but understanding both options is a valuable asset for a CA administrator.
