ACPI and APM
Configuring power management allows you to control how a computer consumes energy. Windows XP Professional supports the ACPI specification. The ACPI architecture is designed to provide for Operating System-Directed Power Management (OSPM). Windows XP Professional also supports the legacy APM version 1.2 BIOS architecture; however, APM provides only limited power management support.
If you do not have an APM-based or ACPI-based computer, it is still possible to manage some aspects of power consumption. For example, depending on the capabilities of your hardware, you can reduce the power consumed by the computer by setting timers to turn the display or disk drives off.
