The following are best practices for user state migration:

  • Plan user state migration early. Identify early the applications, data, and settings you must migrate. Also decide when, where, and how you want to save and restore users’ state.

  • Use User State Migration Tool if possible. Evaluate User State Migration Tool before third-party user state migration tools because the tool is very easy to use and costs nothing more than time and effort to use. Only if you decide that you can’t reasonably meet your requirements by using this tool (difficulty, limitations, and so on) should you look at third-party products.
