4.1. Introducing Active Directory

AD is what makes Windows networking network. It is both a system service and a database repository. AD authenticates users, stores vital system and application information, and plays the gatekeeper to domain resources. Windows Server 2008 brings us the concept of roles and features. A role is a collection of services that a server can perform, and its features are the individual capabilities available within a role. Directory Services is one of the roles you can define; it's a central role. If you first create a directory server, then this role creates and maintains your entire domain structure. Additional domain servers add fault tolerance, higher capacity, and better access.
