3.1. Next Generation TCP/IP Stack
Microsoft rewrote the TCP/IP stack as part of the Windows Server 2008 core and dubbed the new design as the Next Generation TCP/IP Stack. The previous version of the stack was written in the mid-1990s when Windows NT shipped. Although it's been enhanced over the years, the stack needed a redesign to seamlessly accommodate IPv6, as well as to make the stack more secure and perform better. This new stack, in addition to appearing on Vista and Windows Server 2008, is more easily ported to other operating systems and is being rolled out to Windows CE, the Xbox, and Windows Embedded in future versions.
