5.6. Quality of Service

Quality of Service (QoS) refers to the control of network traffic so that an application, client, or user can expect a certain level of performance. It arises out of the telephone industry as part of the X.902 standard and has been applied to packet-switched networks such as TCP/IP.

A QoS network manager will measure:

  • Available network bandwidth

  • Application usage by examining packets and protocols used

  • Traffic source and destination

  • Port usage

and from these measurements allow the application of a set of policy rules that control network usage. QoS doesn't guarantee a high level of performance; what QoS refers to is the assurance of a certain level of guaranteed service. Applications that benefit from QoS policies include ...
