You will usually hear TCP/IP referred to as a protocol suite instead of just a protocol. There is a good reason for this. TCP is one protocol, and IP is another. To begin with, we have two protocols, not just one, and there are other protocols, services, and utilities that have been developed over the years to enhance the capabilities of what started out as a simple concept. Today, TCP/IP includes not only TCP and IP, but also things like dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP), domain name system (DNS), as well as a host of applications and troubleshooting utilities that make operating a TCP/IP network really a quite simple task.
