Preface—Second Edition

The philosophy of the Second Edition remains, as it was in the First Edition, to provide fundamental insights into the achievable performance of integrated and severely scaled information processing systems utilizing basic scientific principles. Moreover, progress in the development of scaled electronic systems for biomedical applications has been quite rapid, and thus an objective of the Second Edition is to provide an update on the status of systems of diminishing size. Chapter 1 provides an overview of the goals of the book in terms of a micron-scale functional information processing system and makes contact with recent progress in the downscaling of biomedical systems.
