Work envy, workhorses and the mid-career librarian

Librarians are seen as nice, as collegial, cooperative and collaborative. It’s the name of the librarian game. Think of shared catalogue records, inter-library loans, and of reference initiatives such as Chasing the Sun, where health librarians in Australia, New Zealand and England answer clinicians’ research questions while the other country sleeps.

Most librarians work in flat organizations with librarians clustered at one level and a few who have secured organizational leadership roles with commensurate status and remuneration at another level.
