Assessment of Labour Progress

Normal progress of labour is the ability of both woman and foetus to respond to the physiological demands of labour without deviating from normal.

OBJECTIVES
  1. Early identification of deviations from normal labour.
  2. Sustain no injury to mother and foetus during labour.
  3. Motivate woman for active participation in labour process.
METHODS OF ASSESSING LABOUR PROGRESS

Labour progress can be assessed by two methods:

  1. Recording of partograph
  2. Recording of cervicograph

Recording of Partograph

Partogram is an effective means of recording the progress of labour (Figure 21.1). It is a chart on which the following salient features of labour are entered in a graphic form: 

  • Maternal temperature
  • Pulse
  • BP
  • Strength ...
