Preparation for Medical/Surgical Induction

Induction of labour is defined as the initiation of uterine contractions before the spontaneous onset of labour by medical and/or surgical means for the purpose of accomplishing birth process.

OBJECTIVES
  1. Describing maternal and fetal indications for induction of labour.
  2. Explaining the method of oxlytocin infusion.
  3. Helping to assess the progress of labour through Bishop’s scoring system.
INDICATIONS

Indications: Maternal

  1. Postterm pregnancy
  2. Hypertension
  3. Other medical conditions such as diabetes mellitus, renal diseases
  4. Premature rupture of membranes
  5. Placental abruption
  6. Previous stillbirth
  7. Unstable lie

Contraindications: Maternal

  1. Client refusal
  2. Placenta previa
  3. Abnormal foetal presentation ...
