Vulnerability Scanners
A number of fine utility programs can scan a network to determine things like open ports, passive applications, and more. Nmap, for example, has been around since 1997, is updated regularly, and has been made available as open-source software. It was designed initially to do what its name would suggest—map a network so a system administrator doesn’t have to walk from room to room, creating a physical map of all the computers. In numerous updates, features have been added, and Nmap is now used heavily as a vulnerability scanner. You can find Nmap at http://nmap.org/.
