What makes embedded systems, specialized systems, and mobile systems sufficiently similar to cover them in a single chapter? That’s a valid question, considering they run on a wide array of operating systems—from Windows, Linux, and macOS to Android, iOS, and customized single-platform OSes—and have a variety of uses, including single-purpose devices (e.g., an Internet-connected refrigerator), specific-purpose devices (e.g., a home automation hub), and multipurpose devices (e.g., a smartphone or tablet).
