Chapter 18

Summary, Conclusions and Future Research

18.1 Summary of Results

In this monograph we characterized a suite of iterative turbo receivers suitable for employment in a wide range of multi-antenna-aided multi-carrier systems operating in realistic, rapidly fluctuating channel conditions. More specifically, we reported the following major findings.

18.1.1 OFDM History, Standards and System Components

Chapter 2 provided a broad state-of-the-art review with reference to the open literature and detailed the general background of our studies throughout this book. The key milestones, events and contributions to the development of OFDM systems spanning several decades were summarized in Tables 1.1 and 1.2. Furthermore, in Section 1.1.1.1 an overview of the MIMO techniques was provided, followed by the introduction to MIMO-OFDM systems in Section 1.1.1.2, where the associated contributions found in the literature were outlined in Tables 1.31.5. Moreover, our review of the SDMA and SDMA-OFDM literature outlined in Section 1.1.1.3 was summarized in Tables 1.6 and 1.7. Chapter 1 outlined the basic functional blocks of MIMO-OFDM systems.

18.1.2 Channel-Coded STBC-OFDM Systems

Our research in Chapter 3 was conducted in the context of both single-user, single-carrier and single-user OFDM systems, which constitutes the introductory and background work for the following chapters. Specifically, in Section 3.2, a general outline of Alamouti’s simple scheme [400] using two transmitters ...
