MIMO in LTE, LTE-Advanced and WiMAX

In recent years, MIMO techniques have been introduced as core features in many practical systems. In this chapter, we exemplify the usefulness of MIMO techniques by introducing MIMO features of 3GPP LTE/LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) and WiMAX systems. While WiMAX IEEE 802.16e and 3GPP LTE Rel. 8 heavily rely on single-user MIMO techniques, such as transmit diversity (TD), beamforming (BF) and spatial multiplexing (SM), the latest versions, such as 3GPP LTE-A Rel. 10 and WiMAX IEEE 802.16m, make proficient use of multi-user techniques (MU-MIMO) to fully maximize the network capacity.
