LISTENING TO YOUR WAKE-UP CALLS
Staying Awake, Aware, and Ready to Learn
Some people don’t wait around for life’s harsher wake-up calls—the broken relationships, failures, and health problems. Instead, these people stay tuned in by using life’s laboratory to keep themselves awake, aware, and learning. We call this mindfulness.1 People who deliberately practice mindfulness are consciously self-aware and self-monitoring; they are open and attentive to other people and to the world around them. They tend to be resilient and strong in the face of power stress, because they attend to personal renewal as a way of life. They also learn from experiences faster and better than most people do.
