CHAPTER SEVENMindful Awareness in Leadership
Overview
What is a mindful leader and what can one do to become one? It requires introspection and self‐awareness and honestly analyzing our motivations behind wanting to be in a leadership role. This chapter describes some highly successful individuals who fall into this category and set a proper example of what it means to become a mindful leader.
In this chapter, a theoretical framework for developing mindful leadership is also presented. This framework is rooted in a thorough understanding of the concepts, a desire to acknowledge and understand one's own nature and shortcomings, and a consistent application of the practices. Without all three components, the development will remain incomplete. This process enables empathic and compassionate behavior which is crucial for healthy leadership.
Mahatma Gandhi's quote “Be the change you want to see in the world” is a perfect example of what it takes to be a mindful and conscious leader. It puts the onus on one's self. If we want others to act and behave differently, we have to implement the change in ourselves first. Asking others to change while we stagnate in our character and habits is not only ineffective, but it is also unrealistic and hypocritical, quickly eroding trust and creating resentment.
