Redstone refers to an interesting group of items and blocks based around the versatile redstone dust item. Redstone-based blocks act as wiring and triggers — they let you create programs that run machines, move blocks around, and basically do some truly amazing things. You can use redstone to improve your buildings and make them more dynamic (and more fun) — this chapter shows you some ways to do that.

Understanding the Essential Concepts of Redstone

Redstone is cool because you can use it to add moving parts and automatic devices (such as pistons and elevators) to your buildings. These types of features make structures look a lot more interesting. You find redstone deep in caves and when you break it, it drops 4 to 5 redstone dust.
