D.1 REFERENCE RECORDINGS

It is wise, in the course of a mix session, to take a break and listen to a reference recording. Is the vocal in today’s mix too loud? Is the bass too soft? When everything is a variable in our multitrack mix, it is good to check in on a known quantity. Referencing another recording resets our thresholds, reminds us of what good levels sound like, restores our confidence in the foundational elements of our mix, and enables us to return our focus to higher-level issues.

Maintain a listening list and carry some of those recordings to every session you are a part of. These recordings should be tracks you know and love, recordings whose basic levels and balance in fact set a great example of ...
