SPECTRUM FOR WiMAX NETWORKS

In theory, WiMAX can achieve speeds of 100Mbps: all an operator needs is 30MHz of spectrum to play around with. The problem is there aren’t that many operators around with such a large block of spectrum.

—Rupert Baines, VP Marketing, picoChip

Spectrum is one of the key requirements for the deployment of WiMAX services. Many of the technologies being developed for WiMAX depend on the frequency band in which the systems can be deployed (i.e., 2.4GHz, 3.5GHZ, or 5GHz). This is because all the parameters, such as usable bandwidths, transmitted power, FFT size, and propagation characteristics, depend on the frequency band. Access to the spectrum and its cost holds the key for commencing deployment of WiMAX in many countries ...
