As we noted in Chapter 8, the terms radio frequency identification (RFID) and NFC are commonly used interchangeably, in part because both employ radio waves to transmit information between objects. RFID is the more established of two; it has been used in inventory management and asset tracking for over a decade. RFID is also able to transmit data over a longer range, but remember it is a one-way technology, limited to sending information from a tag to a hand-held reader. NFC represents an evolution of RFID in that it allows two-way communication between objects, albeit over a shorter range, and thus is more suitable for ticketing, payments, and marketing campaigns.
