The humble, squiggly earthworm is our planet’s unsung superhero. Burrowing deep beneath our feet, earthworms mix up the ground, allowing water and nutrients to replenish the soil. Earthworms are hungry little buggers, munching on tiny bits of dead plants, fungi, and even dead animal matter; did you know earthworm poop is a great fertilizer? Juicy earthworms are a delectable treat for birds and other animals, providing a rich source of protein, iron, and amino acids. Earthworms are even edible by humans, and the squirming little critters can be boiled, roasted, or deep-fried and added to soups and salads.
Ick. Well, earthworms do not have a place on my dinner plate—at least not yet!
