Standards-Based Layouts are Already Responsive

One of the first things to realize about mobilizing a web site is that you need to relinquish some control over positioning of elements. Not complete control, of course, just some.

But think about this for a moment: as Ethan Marcotte has articulated recently in his teachings about responsive web design, and others before him have been explaining for years—going back to the most ancient web scriptures of Jeffrey Zeldman—being a standards-based web designer is inherently about being responsive.
