Modeling Platforms

This key chapter deals with the underpinnings of software applications: the platforms that are responsible for realizing them. A platform for a given application is defined as the set of software and hardware elements that are necessary to execute it. Clearly, an application is fundamentally constrained by the physical capabilities of its platform. Hence, to determine the performance characteristics of an application, it is necessary to know the corresponding characteristics of its underlying platform.
