Chapter 4PHYSICAL PHENOMENA
INTRODUCTION
Table 4.1 lists the physical phenomena of interest for the six archetypal problems introduced in Chapter 2 and discussed in Chapter 3. All of these phenomena are concerned with physical flow, responses, signaling, and control. This chapter addresses the state of knowledge in representing these phenomena.
Table 4.1 Physical Phenomena Associated with Archetypal Problems
Problem | Phenomena | Category |
Counterfeit parts | Physical flow of parts supply, including inspection | Physical, designed |
Counterfeit parts | Physical assembly of parts and system performance | Physical, designed |
Healthcare delivery | Physical flow of demands to capacities, yielding revenues and health outcomes | Physical, designed |
Traffic control | Physical traffic congestion throughout urban transportation grid | Physical, designed |
Traffic control | Physical flow of vehicles through urban transportation grid | Physical, designed |
Urban resilience | Physical responses of urban infrastructures | Physical, designed |
Cancer biology | Intercellular biological signaling mechanisms throughout body | Physical, natural |
Cancer biology | Intracellular biological signaling mechanisms within cells | Physical, natural |
Cancer biology | Mechanisms of cell growth and death, driven by genetics and behaviors | Physical, natural |
