Different models of computation are used in different phases of a design process. We discuss the suitability of MoCs in three design activities.

Performance analysis aims to assess and understand some quantitative properties at an early stage of the product development. As examples we take buffer analysis and delay analysis and find that the U-MoC is suitable for many performance analysis tasks as long as no timing information is required. Buffer analysis is a good case in point. When timing information is required, a synchronous or timed MoC should be used. For many time-related analysis tasks a synchronous MoC is sufficient.
