9 INFORMATION MODEL QUALITY

In Chapter 1 we started to look into the subject of model quality. In this chapter we will take a more detailed look into model quality. In particular, we will look at three areas that influence the quality of an information or data model: These are:

  • genericity and specificity in models;
  • three schemes for enforcing or determining the quality of a model:
    • the nine characteristics of a good data model (from Graeme Simsion and Graham Witt20);
    • the six principles of high quality data models (from Matthew West21); and
    • the five dimensions of data model quality (from Michael Reingruber and William Gregory22);
  • the layout of models.
