photoelectric counter A device that registers a count whenever an object breaks the light beam shining on its phototube or photocell. An amplifier then boosts the minute energy to register on a mechanical or other type of counter. Slow counting rates can be recorded by a mechanical counter, but high rates require an electronic counter.
