Modern earth building codes, standards and normative development

Abstract:

This chapter provides an overview of standards and normative documents in the field of building with earth developed in the last 30 years. Building with earth is usually regarded as a ‘non-engineered’ construction technique with roots in a rich tradition of building heritage that needs to be maintained. As a consequence, building standards in the field of earth building have been drawn up in only a few countries. In the last decade, however, the use of earth in construction has become increasingly widespread in many countries.
