Though the fundamentals of machine automation go back to the Jacquard loom in the beginning of the 19th century, John Parsons was awarded patent #2,820,187 in 1958 for “Motor Controlled Apparatus for Positioning Machine Tool” and invented numeric control (NC) as we know it today. Early NC machines used punched tape to record sequences of operations. When computers began directly controlling the machines, computer numeric control (CNC) became a powerful new force in manufacturing. (See Figure 3-1.)
