Unless you are building a Tetris clone or a text-based game, like the classic game Zork, you will need animations in your video game to make it feel more fluid. Even the 1978 game Space Invaders had a very basic and crude animation, where enemies provide the illusion of movement by switching between two sprites every second or so: at one moment the aliens’ arms are down and the next second the arms are up.
