CHAPTER 8

Leadership and Sustainability

In a world where business has been widely criticized for its negative impacts on the environment, the economy, and employees, sustainability in leadership is an important factor. As the business world has focused on short-term profit taking, the demand for business leaders to rethink duties owed to society has increased exponentially.1 In this chapter the importance of sustainability is explained as a leadership duty. The Triple Bottom Line approach to evaluating organizational effectiveness is also explained as an element of corporate social responsibility and the limitations of that three-part approach to sustainability are identified.
