Benchmarking to Set Goals and Track Progress

The JML Inventory is a powerful tool for measuring and managing employee job motivation—which most organizations fail to measure or track. In general, employees operate at medium or low motivation levels, meaning that there is considerable performance potential that has not been tapped. Use the JML Inventory to identify and take advantage of any attitude-related performance gaps. Companies sometimes use a survey version of the JML Inventory to ask employees to measure their own motivation levels directly, but a simpler approach is for you, the manager, to fill in a JML Inventory based on your impressions of your employees. The version in Exhibit A-1 is designed for you to use this way.
