This book will show you many tools and techniques for maximizing internal motivation. But the thing is, nobody is going to adopt new management behaviors unless there is a real need—in particular, a need to replace other behaviors because they are no longer effective. So let's think for a minute about what managers commonly do, about the current menu of leadership behaviors. Some of the traditional manager's performance levers have their far end embedded in employees' extrinsic motivation, not their intrinsic motivation—so we want to make sure we know which ones NOT to use.
