Successful Rewards: The High Involvement Approach

How do you know if the recognition and rewards you provide are working?

Rewards work well when they stimulate high involvement on the part of employees. Specifically, employees need to be engaged with the reward or recognition system on two dimensions: rational and emotional. Only when you have high involvement on both dimensions do you get a motivational bang for your reward buck. In other words, a good reward or recognition event makes sense intellectually to the employee—they get what it is about and see how it relates to important workplace goals. And the recognition or reward event also feels good to them—it generates positive enthusiasm on an emotional level.
