2.6. MPEG-4 Applications

The goal of MPEG-4 tools is to enable the deployment of applications for users. Listing all the applications enabled by MPEG-4 is impossible. The limits of MPEG-4 applications depend only on the creativity of the application developers. Some of the application areas for which the MPEG-4 standard provides interesting functionality are

  • Streaming multimedia over the Internet/Intranet

  • Mobile communications

  • Digital multimedia broadcast

  • Content-based storage and retrieval

  • Interactive media distributed on (optical) storage

  • Infotainment

  • Real-time communications

  • Studio and television postproduction

  • Surveillance

  • Virtual meetings
