3.3. Timing Model and Synchronization of Streams

In the previous section we saw how to associate a set of streams with one another in order to describe a multimedia presentation composed of a large set of such streams. The presentation of these streams in a coordinated manner is basically governed by the scene description. Therefore, a clearly defined notion of time must be established between the scene description and all the media streams. Then, a mechanism is needed to convey such timing information. This is achieved by the synchronization layer syntax specified in [MPEG-4-1, Clause 10]. The synchronization layer often is abbreviated as sync layer or SL.
