8.2. Coding of Rectangular Video Objects

In MPEG-4 video coding, two main coding modes are distinguished: the coding of rectangular video objects and the coding of arbitrarily shaped video objects. In this section, the coding of rectangular video objects is described.

In principle, a rectangular video object is identical to a frame that is used in well-known video coding standards such as MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 [MPEG1-2, MPEG2-2, HaPN96], H.261 and H.263 [H261, H263, Rijk96].
