8.5. Special Video Coding Tools

This section describes the MPEG-4 special video coding tools. They are the interlaced, error-resilience, reduced resolution, sprite coding, and high-quality texture coding tools. In addition, the MPEG-4 short video header operational mode is presented in this section.

8.5.1. Interlaced Coding

Interlaced video is widely used in TV broadcasting. It still represents a good compromise between frame rate and spatial resolution and there is substantial legacy content.
