16.5. Speech Communication Test
An important application area covered by the MPEG-4 Audio standard is speech communication. The algorithms standardized for speech coding were designed for transmitting voice over different networks, including PSTN, IP, and wireless.
Other standardization bodies (such as ITU-T and the European Telecommunication Standards Institute [ETSI]) have standardized speech coding algorithms for similar applications [G722, G723, G729, ETSI97].
In the test described in this section, the performance of the MPEG-4 algorithms for speech communications is compared with the performance of other standards addressing the same type of applications [N2424].
